
Clarity is a Gift
He asked for feedback while still in the room. One signal can change how someone shows up in the next one.
I interviewed a candidate recently who was not quite the right fit for the role.
Near the end I asked, 'Any questions?' He said, 'Yes. Can you share concrete feedback on how I showed up today?'
That was refreshing. Not because it changed the outcome, but because it changed how I saw him. It signaled something rare: ownership and real-time courage.
Interviews are not only a yes or no gate. They can also be used as a growth mechanism.
If you hire into the wrong fit, everyone loses. The person feels miscast. The team pays the cost in ramp time and morale. But walking away with clear feedback can still be a win. It gives them something real to work on, and brings them closer to the role where they will actually thrive.
Two reminders I am taking with me:
For candidates: ask for feedback while you are still in the room. Be specific.
For interviewers: when someone asks in good faith, give at least one concrete thing. One signal can change how they show up in the next room.
The market is tough enough as it is. Clarity and kindness matter.
